I’ve always believed in a level playing field – which I often thought was largely economics. The more life happened, it became increasingly apparent that wellness (across physical, emotional, and social wellness) is the only lever that can enable a level playing field. As such, the only north star worth pursuing: make wellness a basic human right.
When I started conceptualizing CLO on the back of a brown notebook, I wanted to design a wellness companion that could be accessible to anyone (rich or poor), anywhere (at home or on the move), for any day (good or bad). Having spent my entire career in the healthcare industry, I just didn’t see the light at the end of the tunnel. Even if we miraculously solve for the laundry list of archaic issues in the system – there is often a large forgotten population priced out of the solution (gig workers, contractors, service industry individuals – with an increased burden on new mothers).
I was able to travel the world for a good 10 years (my parents epitomize selflessness), listening to stories from strangers and drawing venn diagrams on the problem at hand. Single mothers battling basic grocery bills, hostesses taking care of their parents bills with tips, a young woman trying to delicately balance expectations & her own north star.
Spirit airlines, tight space tighter wallets – on a flight to Cincinnati I sat down to sketch out what a wellness side kick might look like – a flood of inspirations from the past came rumbling in. Lizzie McGuire’s little avatar, Violet Baudelaire, Miss Honey, Edna Mode, Elena Gilbert, etc. So many remarkable characters who would set the benchmark – finished with a leather jacket drawn from Cindy Crawford’s signature black leather biker jacket.
No one better than an individual I first met on the 6th grade student council. Dr. Vaishnavi 17 years since we had donned the Cgynus and Pegusus t-shirts inside a physics lab in Dubai – we sat down again in a chinese restaurant in NYC to talk about CLO. We then built on that team with powerhouse women—leaders, new mothers, compassionate humans—to solve this problem together. Brainstorming how to build the right information and present it for someone to find help when they were looking for it - content tailored to hormones, post partum, self care for young mothers, and more.
This is work in progress - but we have our north star.
CLO aims to level the playing field - wellness as a human right, make daily self care easy, and inspire a future generation of women leaders.
My ask for you as a reader is to download CLO Woman, share it with someone who you think it might help, and let me know what could be better. To understand why CLO has such an emphasis on giving the stage to women, you can continue reading some of the stories that inspired - they are the voices behind the north star.
Yours,
G
